Overlooking People’s Square, the hub and heart of Shanghai nest inside the Far East Hotel, Viviant wears

century-old architecture as outerwear. Retaining and restoring fundamental elements of the original building, simply responding to history was not the idea the point was to show reverence. Scrolling diners’ view, the dining area window is a notable convert.

Warm coy elements of coastal chic evoke bygone cruise ships, indebted to the discreet charm of Southern France. Simple mid-century lines extend the retro framework and enunciate nautical nods. Deepening the hi-gloss gradient on nearby pillars, tall neutral domes enclose patrons, reducing the distance between diners, food and other waves of sensation nearby.
