ORTENSIA
Project - Hospitality
2024 - SHANGHAI
A Japanese chef and Chinese patissier serving fine French-Japanese cuisine in Shanghai’s historic Zhangyuan district. Sculpting supposed cultural “clashes” drove the design direction. Opening in 2024, the Michelin-approved restaurant marries Japanese refinement, Shanghai’s historical charm and delicate femme French sensibility.
Ortensia lends its name from the Hydrangea (Hortensia), a pillar of the design. Flower becomes motif, planted in various likeness through the space. A budding entrance desk welcomes guests, petals open on metal fixtures and a centerpiece balances the scale of feminine and masculine. Old and new each layer is treasured, preserving the original Shikumen wood ceiling; reimagining classic French wall panels.
Ortensia is an interplay of cultures with a touch of whimsy; our design celebrates gastronomy, beauty, and heritage. Part-design part-reiteration, the interior is an expression of the fusion of ideas and identities Ortensia embodies.
