TONG AN LI VILLA
Project - Residence
2025 - SHANGHAI
Five flights up, this villa is the spatial rendition of an ancient idiom “Jinse Huannian,” words grappling with bittersweet memory, cherished golden years and golden eras. The practice begins outside with a red brick facade, until European influence in late 19th century Shanghai bricks were traditionally blue. Considered a visual icon of the city today, the red brick entry is a visual reminder of the country’s fearless ascent toward modernity.
Western art movements are collaged with enduring pieces of Chinese culture, projected through the creative lens of today. Interactions of East and West continue on the interior, Victorian era decorative arts and intricate Art Nouveau details are embedded in the villa like treasure. Eclectic grandeur honoring what was and will be, collaborating with contemporary artists and designers to give future generations, the not-yet-old and not-yet-born, something to reinvent next century.
